About Tyumen
Tyumen is the first city of Siberia
Tyumen is the most ancient city in Siberia and one of the most beautiful cities in this mysterious land.
Tyumen Burg was founded on the site of the legendary town of Chimgi-Tura
by the order of Tsar Feodor I of Russia on 29th July 1586. The fortress
was built on a wide cape limited by gullies and the Tyumenka River from the
west and the Tura River from the east. It corresponded to the so called “Tyumen
Portage” on the historical trade route from Central Asia to the Volga region
and, for many centuries, had been the apple of discord for South Siberian nomads.
To the North and the Far East, Tyumen was connected by water routes.
The city history started 29th July with the foundation of Tyumen Burg, which became the first Russian town in Siberia. It offers you a breathtaking combination of historical sights and modern architecture along with splendid landscapes and beauty of nature. You will see it with your own eyes when you come to visit the city of Tyumen. Welcome to discover this wonderful land!
In one
of her verses, the poetess Valentina Gaylans says:
Siberia, you’re in the heart
of Russia,
God bless this land and keep
away from harm.
My love to you is like your
oil gusher
Deep in my soul I keep your
beauty and your charm.
(Translated by S. Kudryashova)
Tyumen benefits from an incredibly rich historic heritage including prominent people, places of interest and architectural concepts of the old city.
One
of the illustrative examples is Alexander’s
non-classical secondary school. This educational institution was opened in 1879,
its building having been designed by Saint-Petersburg architect Vorotilov. I.Y.
Slovtsov (1844-1907), a famous cultural worker in West Siberia and member of
Stockholm Academy of Sciences, had been principal of this school from 1897 to
1906. A two-storey school building was considered to be one of the most
beautiful stone buildings in Tyumen and one of the best educational
institutions in West Siberia.
Museum of Local Lore (City Hall). Built in 1830-s, the City Hall ranks among the
most original and unforgettable architectural monuments creating an image of
Tyumen historic centre. The building is decorated with a striking tower clock
made in 1857 by A. Trusov, a peasant who lived in Uspenskaya volost (a small
rural district). On the first floor there is a constant exposition “Museum and
nature” holding paleontological exhibits and introducing the flora and fauna of
Tyumen region.
School of Commerce (Tyumen State Architectural and Building University). Designed
by the architect V.K. Oltorzhevskiy, the school of commerce belonged to the
merchant I.P. Kolokolnikov and represents the Russian classicism. This building
obtained the gold medal at the contest of school building designs, which was
held at the world exhibition in Paris in 1913.
House of Merchant Kolokolnikov (12 Pervomayskaya St.). I.P. Kolokolnikov
belonged to the top guild and considered very important the education of the
citizens. He established three educational institutions, namely, a school of
commerce (actual Tyumen State Architectural and Building University), a private
school (14 Lunacharskiy St.) and a school of commerce in Podaruyevskaya St. (2 Semakov
St.), which was irretrievably damaged.
House of Merchant Masharov (24 Lenin St.). One of the most beautiful and cosy stone buildings in Tyumen. The fronts of the mansion abound in decoration, which does not, however, give the impression of redundancy. Besides, big rectangular windows arrange the fronts of the mansion, being their principal element.
House of Merchant Burkov (30 Dzerzhinskiy St.). Vasiliy Petrovich Burkov owned a brick factory, a printing-house and
was also engaged in grain trade. In 1905 he accommodated the legal club “Tyumen
Workers’ Union” on the ground floor of his house, where the Union members
discussed questions concerning the workers’ professional life, cultural values
and self-education. By 1906 Tyumen Workers’ Union had become quite influential.
Under the label of self-education, the Union members propagated Bolshevistic
concepts. In January 1906 the club was closed, and the bolshevists went
underground. In 1906 Burkov began to print his newspaper titled “Siberian
Voice”.
Tyumen is also famous for its ancient temples, which glorify the Russian architects. These masterpieces both strike with their beauty and provide spiritual food for all the faithful.
Znamenskiy cathedral representing the “Siberian baroque” style is recognised as one of the main
architectural and spiritual symbols of Tyumen.
The first wooden Znamenskaya church was built in 1624. The church iconostasis was painted by a Tobolsk coachman Feodor Cherepanov in 1801. Nowadays, while you admire Znamenskaya church stretching up to the sky, its outline can seem to have been born by a unique sudden inspiration of folk architects, and it is next to impossible to suppose that its organic architectural ensemble had been formed for more than a century.
Lord Cross Erection Church,
also called Nikolskaya Church,
was founded in the south of Zatyumenskiy cape in 1774 thanks to parishioners’
donations and was hallowed in 1791. The church
incorporates five richly decorated domes.
In August 1998 the temple was restored and hallowed by the patriarch of Moscow and Whole Russia Aleksiy II. In December 1997 a seminary was opened at the temple. In 1999 a new building was raised for the seminary, which forms an indivisible architectural ensemble together with the temple.
Trinity Monastery.
In 1616 in Tyumen, not far from
Yamskaya sloboda, Preobrazhensky monastery was founded by the elder named
Nifont who had come from Kazan province.
The early XVIII century marked the dawn of stone building era in Siberia. In 1708 the Siberian metropolitan Filofey Leschinskiy encouraged the foundation of a stone monastery. Nowadays the cathedral has three big and two small domes resembling those of the Ukrainian temples. The monastery is fenced about by a stone wall 386.5 metres long.
Spasskaya Church.
Representing a lively patterned Russian architectural style of XVII century,
Spasskaya Church is one of the most fascinating buildings in Tyumen.
No other architectural construction in Tyumen can be compared to this church described
as an example of harmonious abundance of architectural decorative elements,
where architects seem to have thought over all the details for the fronts to be
ideally decorated.
Roman-Catholic Church. Redbrick Roman-Catholic Saint Joseph
Church was built in 1903-1906 by the local Polish community consisting of
exiles who had taken part in the Polish revolt against Russia in 1863. 15th
December 1929 the church was closed and the building was used for other
purposes.
On Christmas, 25th December 1998, the church was transferred to Tyumen catholic community.
Tyumen Synagogue.
In 1911 Yalutorovsk rabbi Eisenstaedt initiated the foundation of a
synagogue in Tyumen with the local Jewish community funds. A year later, the
religious building was opened.
